Big Knit – snowman hat

Time to share my next Big Knit pattern and this one is very apt for our current weather.

Big Knit – snowman hat pattern (UK terminology)

Using DK yarn with a 3.5mm hook and the amigurumi method (i.e. continuous rounds).

  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • htr = half treble
  • ss = slip stitch
  • dc2tog = double crochet 2 together

Body

  • Make a magic ring and ch 1
  • Round 1 – 6dc into magic ring (6)
  • Round 2 – 2dc into each stitch (12)
  • Round 3 – (2dc in next stitch, dc in next stitch) x 6 (18)
  • Round 4 – (2dc in next stitch, dc in next two stitches) x 6 (24)
  • Rounds 5-14 – dc in each stitch (24)
  • Finish off and weave in ends.

Head

  • Make a magic ring and ch 1
  • Round 1 – 6dc into magic ring (6)
  • Round 2 – 2dc into each stitch (12)
  • Round 3 – (2dc in next stitch, dc in next stitch) x 6 (18)
  • Round 4 – (2dc in next stitch, dc in next two stitches) x 6 (24)
  • Round 5-7 – dc in each stitch (24)
  • Round 8 – (dc2tog, dc in next two stitches) x 6 (18)
  • Round 9 – (dc2tog, dc in next stitch) x 6 (12)
  • Stuff head firmly
  • Round 10 – dc2tog x 6 (6)
  • Finish off and leave end of yarn long enough to be able to sew head to body.

Nose

  • Chain 3
  • Row 1 – htr in 2nd chain from hook, ss in last ch
  • Finish off and leave end of yarn long enough to be able to sew nose to head.

Scarf

  • Chain 40
  • Row 1 – dc in 2nd chain from hook, work dc into each of the remaining chains
  • Finish off and weave in ends

To make up

  • Sew nose on to the snowman’s head
  • Embroider eyes and mouth
  • Embroider buttons on snowman’s body
  • Sew head on to body
  • Wrap scarf around neck and hold in place with a couple of stitches
